When we first brought Melanie home, one of the biggest questions everyone kept asking was, “What kind of dog is she?” Honestly, we had no idea. She had the coloring of a Doberman, the fluffy fur of a German Shepherd, and ears that seemed to have a mind of their own. Every person who met her had a different guess. Some people thought she was a Rottweiler mix, others guessed Belgian Malinois, and a few people even thought she had some Labrador in her. Trying to figure out what breed Melanie was quickly became part of the adventure of fostering her.

Melanie came into our lives at the perfect time. After some difficult experiences fostering before her, we were nervous but hopeful about opening our home again. From the start, Melanie had so much personality. She was energetic, goofy, and incredibly loyal. Even though she was still adjusting to a new environment, she acted like she had been part of our family forever.

For months, we kept trying to figure out her breed mix. We compared pictures online, asked veterinarians, rescue volunteers, and even random strangers at softball games. Everyone had their own opinion. Eventually, after enough research and conversations, we finally learned that Melanie was most likely a Doberman and German Shepherd mix. Once we found out, everything started to make sense. She had the protective and intelligent personality of both breeds, mixed with endless energy and curiosity.

One of the best parts about fostering Melanie was how involved she became in my everyday life, especially softball. During the three months she stayed with us, she came to so many of my softball games. She absolutely loved being there. The second we pulled into the parking lot, her excitement would take over. She loved watching people walk by, soaking up attention from teammates, and sitting near the dugout like she was part of the team.

A lot of people at the field knew Melanie before they even knew her story. She became our little softball mascot for the season. After games, teammates would come over to pet her, and she would happily soak up every second of attention. Looking back now, it is impossible to separate those softball memories from Melanie because she was there for so many of them.

Fostering Melanie reminded us that every dog brings something different into your life. She brought laughter, chaos, endless curiosity, and so many unforgettable memories. Even though her adoption story deserves its own post, the three months we spent figuring out who Melanie was will always hold a special place in our hearts.
